Getting the perfect fit for your curtains starts with precise measurements. Ill-fitting curtains can throw off the entire look of a room, making it feel awkward or incomplete. Whether you’re dealing with standard windows or custom designs, knowing how to measure accurately is crucial for achieving a polished and professional appearance.
The first step is to decide how you want your curtains to hang. Identifying the style you wish to choose will make measuring easier. For most modern homes, the “full-length” look is popular, with curtains that either graze the floor or puddle slightly for added elegance. Reversely, more traditional looks can vary on individual tastes which you can research or ask our professionals how to achieve the look you desire. Once you’ve decided, measure from the mounting point of the curtain rod (usually about 4–6 inches above the window frame) down to your desired length. For grazing curtains, stop about half an inch above the floor to prevent dragging, while puddled curtains can extend 2–3 inches beyond.
Next, measure the length, width, and height to get the dimensions of your window and decide how much coverage you want. To create a full, luxurious look, aim for curtain panels that are 1.5 to 3 times the width of the window. This ensures the curtains will have enough fabric to drape beautifully when closed. Lastly, when measuring, don’t forget to account for the rod and finials. The rod should extend several inches beyond the window frame on either side to allow the curtains to stack outside the glass when open, maximizing natural light. A typical recommendation is 4–8 inches on each side.
